Poppy's top tips to save our Oceans
1. Reduce single-use plastic - This is a classic, but still very important! When you go litter picking on the beaches, it still surprises me just how much rubbish is floating around in our sea. |
2. Sign the High Seas Treaty -The High Seas are our shared international waters with some of the most biodiverse yet least protected areas on Earth. Signing this treaty will help defend our ocean against overexploitation. |
3. Shop sustainably - Overfishing and by-catch is a huge threat to our ocean's biodiversity. Sourcing our seafood from local, sustainable fishermen/fishmongers is the way to go. Granted, we're lucky in Cornwall to have plenty of options! |
4. Greener transport - The marine ecosystem is fragile and susceptible to change, leaving it particularly vulnerable. As the climate warms, so do our oceans. Choosing more sustainable transport methods such as walking, cycling, catching the bus or even car-shares are great ways to reduce our carbon footprint. |
5. Volunteer - If you live near the sea, there's plenty of beach cleaning groups you can join to help pick litter - this may not seem very glamorous but it's a great Sunday afternoon activity! Not to mention, directly making a positive impact to sea-life. |
