    St Ives September Festival

Hello. My name is Gilly and I work in the Poppy Treffry shop in St Ives. The team asked me to write a little piece about the September festival as they know how much I enjoy the event, in fact this is the first year for a long time that I'm not volunteering and helping out, I can just enjoy it instead!   Gilly from team treffry   After the lull when the children go back to school, in mid September St Ives comes alive again with the September Festival. The town will be buzzing with a very relaxed and happy atmosphere. There will be a cornucopia of events from music to literature and the arts. Various genres of music, poetry, theatre, talks and art exhibitions take place over the fortnight.  The main venues are The Guildhall for larger audiences and then The Western Hotel and Arts club also host smaller events.   st-ives-september-festival   All over town, day and night, something will be happening and you can choose to do as little or as much as you like. There are plenty of places to eat, though it's always worth booking in advance if you want to avoid going hungry, it does get very busy. If you are in a hurry the beach cafes have a good variety of food and drink. As well as ticketed events there is plenty of free entertainment happening all over town and live music in many pubs in the evening, and Bobs poetry on the square at lunchtime is always an experience!!   I originally “ found “ the festival when I came here on holiday and was made very welcome wherever I went. You'll see dancing and music on the streets and people having great fun together. You can even join in one of the open mike or free speech sessions and be a part of the festival!! Check out the website and see what you could be tempted by.... Stivesseptemberfestival.co.uk..    Poppy Treffry shop in st ives   See you there I hope. And of course the Poppy Treffry shop will be open every day during the festival so do pop in and let us know what you've enjoyed the most!

Win a wonderful weekend in the Cornish countryside!

Fancy getting away from it all and escaping to a mini paradise hidden away in the Cornish countryside? We could make that dream a reality for you if you're the lucky winner of our summer competition.   The duchess at spring park holiday park   We've teamed up with the lovely folk who run Spring Park (they're actually old friends of ours) to offer you this lovely prize and we're pretty jealous because it's such a nice place to stay, tucked away in a beautiful, quiet, rural spot close to the Cornwall and Devon border.   The-Duchess-at-spring-parkLR   One lucky winner will get 2 nights in the Duchess, a beautiful converted showman's wagon refurbished by the team at Spring Park and only recently available. She comes with a wood fired hot tub so you can sit back and watch the night sky, as well as a fire pit and a wood burning stove. As well as this the winner will also get £150 to spend with us, either in the shop in St Ives or on the website, lovely!   You can enter the competition here and you can check Spring Park out in more detail here, even if you don't win we thoroughly recommend a visit, we sure will be soon!

Top ten things to do in Cornwall

Top ten things to do in Cornwall

With half term rapidly approaching and Cornwall being the very best place to be, or at least we reckon so, we thought we'd put together our top ten things to do in Cornwall, just for you. We'd love to hear if you agree or if we've missed one of your favourites. Top ten things to do in Cornwall - Poppy Treffry 1. Walk a stretch of coast path. With over 250 miles to choose from and boasting some of the absolute best views in Cornwall, the coast path is the perfect way to get out, blow the cobwebs away and work up an appetite! Top tips: Take snacks, swimming things and keep an eye out for dolphins! Top ten things to do in Cornwall - Poppy Treffry 2. Eat! Or at least take tea by the sea! How better to finish a coast path stomp than with a hearty meal or tea and cake. We've got a few favourite coastal cafes we can heartily recommend. The Poldhu beach cafe at Poldhu cove, Mullion, the Rockpool cafe at Mousehole - almost as if you're in the sea, and for an extra special meal how about the Porthgwidden Cafe, St Ives - you may recognise the latter 2 as locations from our previous catalogue shoots! Top tip: Grab a newlyn crab sandwich at the Rockpool cafe. Top ten things to do in Cornwall - Poppy Treffry 3. Spend a day at the Tremenheere Sculpture gardens. A lush dramatic landscape, stream and large scale exotic and sub-tropical planting make Tremenheere (just around the corner from our studio) a great place for a day out. Discover the ever-changing art installations and have lunch at the Tremenheere kitchens. Top Tip: Make sure you leave time to visit 'artisan', the beautifully curated onsite shop with crafts by local and regional makers. Top ten things to do in Cornwall - Poppy Treffry 4. Take a trip and a dip to the Jubilee Pool. Re-opening in May 2016 after 2 years of closure forced by severe damage sustained during winter storms, the beautiful art deco lido in Penzance is an absolute must for any visitor to Cornwall. You'll soon understand why residents have fought so hard to save the lido. Top tip: 10% of sales from any of our bathing beauties range goes directly to the 'save our lido' appeal for the Jubilee pool, so treat yourself! 5. Discover Cornwall's communications legacy at the Porthcurno Telegraph museum. Whilst this might not seem the most obvious day out, it's actually loads of fun! Great displays and appealing to all ages, it's worth a visit just to explore the world war two tunnels. Top Tip: After your visit make sure you head to the nearby beach which is bootiful (!) and the Minack theatre, perched on the cliffs nearby. Top ten things to do in Cornwall - Poppy Treffry 6. Take the Silly onion (or Scillonian!) to the Isles of Scilly We weren't sure whether it was allowed to add this but in the end we thought 'what the hell, we love the Scilly Isles!' You can take a day trip to the islands on the wonderful Scillonian ferry (or by air if your sea legs aren't quite ready!) from Penzance, watching out for dolphins, seals and other marine life as you go. Once there you can island hop or just explore St Mary's, the main island. Top tip: If you have the time then our favourite island is St Agnes, make sure you find sticky toffee pudding whilst you're there! 7. Learn a new skill on a range of courses. If you find inspiration strikes in Cornwall then there's lots of great courses going on where you can learn all sorts of new skills, including cooking fish and making jewellery (not together!). Our favourites are courses at Bedruthan hotel, Cowslip Workshops and Fat Hen, for wild cooking! Top tip: If you attend a course at Bedruthan try and swing a visit to their sister hotel, the Scarlet, just to soak up the view (and perhaps a cocktail!) Top ten things to do in Cornwall - Poppy Treffry 8. Find mysterious goings on in the woods! Step into a magical land in the lovely setting of Tehidy Woods. Rogue theatre have been bringing  the woods to life with a unique blend of storytelling and theatre, all served up with humour and hot chocolate! It's a great day or night out and suitable for lots of ages. We always enjoy it! 9. Fill your lungs with Cornish air on an open top bus tour. Recommended by Gilly from the team, the open top bus is a brilliant way to explore west Cornwall and see sights you might not normally notice from a car. Top Tips: Gilly says hop off for a walk and lunch at the Tinners, discover some Cornish history at Geevor mine and take time for a wander in St Just, finishing up with cake at the Cook book cafe. We like her style! 10. And of course no trip to Cornwall is complete without a trip to St Ives and a visit to the Poppy Treffry shop! Some days you'll even find Poppy in the shop manning the counter and the shop is currently the only place in the world where you can see the full Poppy Treffry range in all it's glory. Perfect for souvenirs, gifts and memento's from your stay, plus you can let us know if you've ticked everything off the list above, and give us your own suggestions too! Top ten things to do in Cornwall - Poppy Treffry  So there you have it, that's the Poppy Treffry, top ten things to do in Cornwall. We hope you find it useful and a little bit inspiring and please do let us know in the comments what you think and what you might have added, we hate to miss out on good stuff!
