The striking red-billed chough is a member of the crow family and has been associated with Cornwall for hundreds of years - even appearing on the Cornish coat of arms. It is distinguished by its glossy black plumage, red legs and curved bill. Our Cornish Chough design came out of a lovely day's sketching at Paradise Park wildlife sanctuary, just up the road in Hayle. He first appeared on his own as an embroidered picture... But Mr Chough was crying out for a higher profile so the design was refined into a repeating pattern and made into a printed fabric... Our back to school selection of Cornish Chough pencil cases and big useful purses is available online now. The full range of printed fabric products will launch this September. "Once widespread in Britain, this mainly coastal species had always been associated with Cornwall but declined severely, then died out altogether in 1973. In 2001 up to five birds arrived in Cornwall, first seen near Newquay. Three of these birds settled in South West Cornwall ... and now around twenty of their offspring have formed a pioneer population. "Operation Chough is a conservation project established at Paradise Park, in Hayle, Cornwall in 1987. Our initial aim was to see the chough back and living once again on the cliffs of Cornwall. We are now working to ensure that its return is permanent and sustainable, and that the small group in Cornwall is able to maintain a healthy population into the future." Just in time for Christmas we're excited to launch our lovely new collection of embroidered pictures, stitched by our little team and ready for your walls, or those of your friends and family! The pictures were all inspired by recent sketches of Poppy's, some of her favourite things like bicycles, Cornwall, birds and of course, ice cream! Whilst some will be lovely in a children's room we also think some are a bit more grown up and would work well in any setting, bringing a bit of textile colour and loveliness to a home. Our lovely embroidered pictures are available either in their mounts (great for posting and letting the recipient choose their own frame) or framed up and ready to hang, hurray!
